Prayer before Study or Work
Direct, O Lord, we beseech you, all our actions by your holy inspirations, and carry them on by
your gracious assistance, that every prayer and work of ours may begin always from you, and by
you be happily ended. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
St. Alphonsus Liguori’s Act of Spiritual Communion
My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things
and I desire You in my soul.
Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.
As though You were already there, I embrace You and unite myself wholly to You; permit not
that I should ever be separated from You. Amen.
St. Padre Pio’s Prayer to Jesus for Strength
O My Jesus give me Your strength when my weak nature rebels against the distress and
suffering of this life of exile, and enable me to accept everything with serenity and peace.
With my whole strength, I cling to Your merits, Your sufferings, Your expiation, and Your tears,
so that I may be able to cooperate with You in the work of salvation.
Give me the strength to fly from sin, the only cause of Your agony, Your sweat of blood, and
Destroy in me all that displeases You and fill my heart with the fire of your holy love and all Your
Clasp me tenderly, firmly, close to You that I may never leave You alone in Your cruel Passion.
I ask only for a place of rest in your heart. Amen
St. Thomas Aquinas’s Prayer for Ordering a Life Wisely
O merciful God, grant that I may desire ardently, search prudently, recognize truly, and bring to
perfect completion whatever is pleasing to You for the praise and glory of Your name. Put my
life in good order, O my God. Grant that I may know what You require me to do. Bestow upon
me the power to accomplish Your will, as is necessary and fitting for the salvation of my soul.
Grant to me, O Lord my God, that I may not falter in times of prosperity or adversity, so that I
may not be exalted in the former, nor dejected in the latter. May I not rejoice in anything unless
it leads me to You; may I not be saddened by anything unless it turns me from You. May I desire
to please no one, nor fear to displease anyone, but You. May all transitory things, O Lord, be
worthless to me and may all things eternal be ever cherished by me. May any joy without You
be burdensome for me and may I not desire anything else besides You. May all work, O Lord,
delight me when done for Your sake and may all repose not centered in You be ever wearisome
for me. Grant unto me, my God, that I may direct my heart to You and that in my failures I may ever feel remorse for my sins and never lose the resolve to change. O Lord my God, make me
obedient without protest, poor without discouragement, chaste without regret, patient without
complaint, humble without posturing, cheerful without frivolity, mature without gloom, and
quick-witted without flippancy, fear You without despairing, truthful without duplicity, do good
works without presumption, reprove my neighbor without exulting, and – without hypocrisy –
strengthen him by word and example. Give to me, O Lord God, a watchful heart, which no
capricious thought can lure away from You. Give to me a noble heart, which no unworthy desire
can debase. Give to me a virtuous heart, which no evil intention can divert. Give to me a
constant heart, which no tribulation can overcome. Give to me a free heart, which no violent
passion can enslave. Give to me, O Lord my God, understanding of You, diligence in seeking You,
wisdom in finding You, conversation pleasing to You, perseverance in waiting for You, and
confidence in finally embracing You. Grant that as penance I may be afflicted by Your hardships
now, through grace I may rely on Your blessings on the way, and in glory I may enjoy You fully in
the Kingdom of Heaven. You who live and reign, God, world without end.
St. Charles Borromeo’ Prayer to Guardian Angel for a Happy Death
In the Name of the Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, I, a poor, unhappy sinner,
make this solemn declaration before thee, O beloved Angel, who has been given me as a
protector by the Divine Majesty:
- I desire to die in the Faith which the Holy, Roman and Apostolic Church adheres to and
defends, in which all the Saints of the New Testament have died. I pray thee, provide that I may
not depart out of this life before the Holy Sacraments of that Church have been administered to
- I pray that I may depart from this life under thy holy protection and guidance, and I beseech
thee, therefore, to assist me at the hour of my death and to propitiate the Eternal judge, whose
Sacred Heart was inflamed with most ardent love for sinners upon the Cross.
- With my whole heart I long to be made a partaker of the merits of Jesus Christ and His holy
Mother Mary, thine exalted Queen, and I pray thee, through the sufferings of Jesus on the
Cross, to mitigate the agonies of my death and to move the Queen of Heaven to cast her loving
glance upon me, a poor sinner, in that dreadful hour, for my sweetest consolation.
O my Dearest Guardian Angel! Let my soul be placed in thy charge, and when it has gone forth
from the prison of this body, do thou deliver it into the hands of its Creator and Redeemer, that
with thee and all the Saints, it may gaze upon Him in the bliss of Heaven, love Him perfectly and
find its blessedness in Him throughout eternity. Amen.
St. Leonard of Port Maurice’s Prayer for Salvation
Lord, I confess that up till now I have not lived as a Christian. I am not worthy to be numbered
among Your elect. I recognize that I deserve to be damned; but Your mercy is great and, full of
confidence in Your grace, I say to You that I want to save my soul, even if I have to sacrifice my
fortune, my honor, my very life, as long as I am saved. If I have been unfaithful up to now, I
repent, I deplore, I detest my infidelity, I ask You humbly to forgive me for it. Forgive me, good
Jesus, and strengthen me also, that I may be saved. I ask You not for wealth, honor or
prosperity; I ask you for one thing only, to save my soul.
